Duration: 4 hour | CEU Points awarded: 4 Ethics Points (CEUs) Accreditation Number: MDB015/MPDP/123/385 Course Description This focused ethics course provides healthcare professionals with a practical understanding of the legal, professional, and digital challenges shaping modern clinical practice in SA. The programme integrates core ethical principles with real-world scenarios drawn from HPCSA guidelines, POPIA, and current global trends. 3 areas: 1. Professional Conduct Explore the foundations of professionalism: integrity, autonomy, accountability, and altruism alongside key legal structures such as the Health Professions Act and the SA Constitution. Participants examine negligence, unprofessional conduct, advertising and canvassing rules, and duties owed to patients and the public. 2. AI, Digital Practice & Data Ethics This module addresses responsible AI use, algorithmic bias, data protection under POPIA, telemedicine standards (HPCSA Booklet 10), online professionalism, and the risks of accessing patient information via social media. The course also reviews the WHO Global Strategy on Digital Health and its implications for practice. 3. Bioethical Issues in Practice Participants engage with contemporary bioethical dilemmas, including informed consent, patient autonomy, end-of-life care, reproductive and genetic ethics, and the balance between cultural context and ethical duty. Course Outcomes By the end of the programme, participants will be able to: 1. Apply core ethical principles to complex clinical scenarios 2. Interpret and implement HPCSA and POPIA regulations correctly 3. Identify and manage ethical risks in digital and AI-supported environments 4. Demonstrate sound professional conduct in alignment with South African law 5. Evaluate bioethical challenges with clarity, cultural awareness, and moral reasoning
