About

Duration: 1 hour  | 0 CPD points Course Description Presented by Prof Jon Patricios This session introduces a modern, evidence-based approach to managing sport-related concussion in school environments. Prof Jon Patricios explores how advanced clinical protocols, contemporary neuroscience, and structured return-to-play and return-to-learn pathways can reshape the way schools identify, treat, and monitor concussion. The programme highlights early recognition, safe decision-making, multidisciplinary management, and the creation of safer sporting cultures for young athletes. Talk Overview Today’s session will explore the changing landscape of concussion management in sport. The talk begins with why concussion deserves focused attention, followed by a look at what actually happens in the concussed brain. You will be taken through the evolution of concussion diagnosis and how brain function has been assessed over time, from early methods to modern neuroscience-informed approaches. Key frameworks such as SCSA, BokSmart, and the Concussion in Sport Group (CISG) will be outlined, along with the clinical assessment tools doctors rely on. You will also learn about several free, accessible tools you can use with your own team. The session covers baseline testing, vestibular–ocular motor testing, and a behind-the-scenes look at what the Springboks do in their concussion protocols. The talk concludes with current best practice in treating concussion and supporting safe return-to-play decisions.
