Duration: 1 hour | CEU Points awarded: 1 General (CEUs), Level 1, Accreditation Number: PPB007/2025/01/014 Oedemas and Lymphoedema: The lymphatic system is a vital component of both the circulatory and immune systems, responsible for maintaining fluid balance, filtering pathogens, and supporting immune responses. It consists of a network of lymph vessels, nodes, and organs that transport lymph—a clear fluid rich in white blood cells—throughout the body. Central to understanding lymphatic flow are lymphosomes, regional drainage areas that guide therapeutic techniques like manual lymphatic drainage. When the lymphatic system is compromised, lymphoedema can occur, marked by chronic swelling. This condition progresses through stages—from a latent phase to severe stages with fibrosis and limb enlargement—and can be classified as primary (congenital) or secondary (due to surgery, infection, or trauma). Related conditions include lipoedema, a painful fat disorder often mistaken for lymphoedema; phlebolymphoedema, where venous and lymphatic issues coexist; and inflammatory oedema, which can be acute or chronic. Treatment aims to reduce swelling, prevent complications, and improve quality of life. Techniques include compression therapy, kinesiology taping, exercise, skincare, education, and manual therapy, forming a comprehensive, multimodal management approach. In this course, you will learn: The function of the lymphatic system and lymphosomes How to identify and differentiate types and stages of lymphoedema Recognition of related conditions for accurate diagnosis Evidence-based approaches to treatment, including compression and taping How to develop individualised treatment plans that improve outcomes and quality of life By course completion, you’ll be equipped with practical tools and knowledge to confidently assess and manage oedema-related conditions in clinical practice.
